About Shaw Lake State Recreation Area

Shaw Lake State Recreation Area is nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountains in El Dorado County, California, just south of Lake Tahoe. This serene high-elevation park surrounds the glacially formed Shaw Lake at approximately 6,000 feet elevation, offering stunning views of the surrounding pine and fir forests, rugged granite outcrops, and nearby mountains. The ecosystem is characterized by ponderosa pine, Jeffrey pine, white fir, and red fir, supporting mule deer, black bears, various bird species, and abundant freshwater fish in the lake. Established in the mid-20th century, Shaw Lake has long served as a year-round outdoor recreation destination. In warmer months, visitors enjoy hiking, mountain biking, camping, fishing for rainbow trout and bass, and paddling small boats or kayaks. In winter, the park transforms into a snowy playground with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Shaw Lake's quiet atmosphere, combined with its accessible location along California State Route 89 near South Lake Tahoe, makes it a favored spot for families and outdoor enthusiasts seeking less crowded alternatives to the busier Tahoe Basin parks. The campground provides developed sites with amenities, and an easy, family-friendly hiking loop encircles the lake. The park’s unspoiled environment and seasonal variety of activities attract visitors throughout the year, making Shaw Lake State Recreation Area a versatile outdoor gem in California’s Lake Tahoe region.
